Police victim protection and victim support should help to protect people whose quality of life has been significantly impaired by crime or accidents from further danger and to offer or provide them with help to restore their original condition.

One focus of the victim support officer's work is to provide information and advice to victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual offences and violent crimes, particularly following traumatizing events.

The processing of traumatic experiences often proceeds more favorably when those affected know more about the traumatic process and use their own opportunities to promote their recovery. In some cases, this can also result in referral to further help services, such as the trauma outpatient clinic.
